Introducing One Thing: The To-Do App That Finally Lets You Focus
One Task, Complete Focus
Let’s be real for a minute.
Most of us are drowning in endless to-do lists with dozens of items competing for our attention. We bounce between tasks, never fully focusing on any single one, and end each day feeling scattered and unproductive despite being “busy” all day. I’ve been there – staring at a list of 50+ tasks, paralyzed by indecision about what to tackle first, and ultimately accomplishing very little that truly matters.
That’s exactly why we created One Thing.
What Makes One Thing Different?
After years of my own struggle with to-do list overwhelm (and hearing from hundreds of you who face the same challenges), I realized something fundamental: we’re approaching productivity all wrong. We don’t need more tasks. We need radical focus.
One Thing is built on a core principle: focus on one task at a time.
Instead of an overwhelming list of 50 items all screaming for your attention, One Thing forces you to prioritize what truly matters right now. Everything else goes into the “Someday” pile, safely stored but out of sight, so you can give your complete attention to the single most important task.
Features That Actually Serve You
- Forced Prioritization: The entire interface centers around choosing your ONE most important task. This eliminates decision fatigue and ensures you’re always working on what truly matters.
- Complete Focus Mode: Once you’ve selected your One Thing, the app transforms to eliminate distractions and help you focus solely on completing that task.
- Someday Storage: Nothing gets lost. Every task that doesn’t make the cut as your One Thing is safely stored in your Someday list, ready to be promoted when appropriate.
- Task Completion Celebrations: We’ve built genuine celebration into every task completion. These aren’t generic “good job” messages – they’re designed to create meaningful moments of accomplishment.
- Clear Progress Tracking: Watch as your completed One Things stack up over time, giving you a visual representation of your focused productivity.
The Science Behind the Simplicity
One Thing isn’t just another pretty interface. We’ve built it on solid cognitive science principles:
- Single-tasking: Research consistently shows that multitasking is a myth. Your brain can only truly focus on one cognitive task at a time. One Thing aligns your to-do list with how your brain actually works.
- Decision fatigue reduction: By forcing prioritization, the app eliminates the mental drain of constantly deciding “what should I work on next?”
- Flow state facilitation: When you remove distractions and focus on one task, you’re much more likely to enter a flow state – that magical zone of complete immersion where your best work happens.

A Personal Note
I’m not just the founder of One Thing – I’m its first desperate user. This app emerged from my own struggle with task overwhelm and the realization that most to-do apps were making the problem worse, not better.
Every feature in One Thing exists because it solved a real problem in my own productivity journey. The forced prioritization? That came after I realized how much time I wasted just deciding what to work on. The Someday list? Born from my anxiety about “forgetting” tasks if I didn’t keep them visible (which just created more mental clutter).
This isn’t just another project for me – it’s the tool I wish I’d had years ago. And I can’t wait to share it with you.
One task. Complete focus. Real progress.
